On Thursday, March 30, 2023, PINEX organized a ceremony to celebrate the Rights of Women as part of the International Women’s Day 2023 around the theme, “Advocacy of Women Entrepreneurs of the Pineapple Sector. They, the women producers, processors, traders of pineapple and pineapple by-products have seized the opportunity offered to them to address a plea to the Ministry of Agriculture.
As far as production is concerned the non-availability in sufficient quantity and everywhere of the pineapple specific fertilizer is hampering the production activities of the women producers. for processing, the women pleaded for the introduction of a lighter and shorter version of the inspection procedures, with a lower and affordable cost to meet the inspection standards for the marketing authorization of their products. At the commercial level, women pleaded for equity and objectivity in the application of community pricing rules in favor of pineapple from Benin and all its derived products in the WAEMU and ECOWAS space. Benin will gain in competitiveness and increased export revenues.
As far as the Nigerian market is concerned, NAFDAC certification is a huge non-tariff barrier to any official trade with Nigeria. The “Amazon” women entrepreneurs of the pineapple sector in Benin, solicit the assistance of the Minister to engage in negotiations with the Federal Government of Nigeria, to have Nigeria effectively apply this 75% exemption from the NAFDAC inspection cost in favor of Beninese companies. Access to the Nigerian market is a guarantee of the creation of many direct and indirect jobs for companies.
The Minister of Agriculture recalled some of the major achievements of the PINEX project for the benefit of women involved in pineapple production and processing. In response to the women’s plea, he promised to discuss the various points raised with his fellow ministers concerned. The Minister also urged PfD and the DEFIA program to further promote the Geographical Indication label of the pineapple sugar loaf of the Allada plateau. He urged women to combine their efforts and pool their knowledge so that the pineapple sector can grow for the benefit of our country.
